If you are working at home you have a lot of strikes against you.

First, maintaining self discipline while you pursue your dream is probably the hardest thing you have to do. At one time, to start a business, I got up every day at 4:30am and working in my office hour after hour, cold calling. And my wife wanted me to get a job. I didn't know that what I was doing would work. So it was hard to have the belief in myself to continue.

Self discipline is much easier when you are working from a successful model. If you have an example you are working from, you can more easily hang in there and stay the course. I think a home based business franchise gives you an edge because you know you are working on a business that someone else has succeeded in. And they have a stake in your success, so they have every reason to help you.

The second major strike against you when working at home is that you must resist the distractions. Your family will assume you are available to do errands best done during the workday. You must maintain the discipline to say no. I don't even answer my home telephone line when I am working. I don't want to get caught up in some distracting phone call that will take me away from work.

Third, there is the tempation to work too much. Dilute your family life and home life by working constantly. And that makes you less productive in the long run because we all need a rest, mentally as well as physically.

I think of all three factors I mentioned, the one about working from a formula, an example, a franchise for instance…is most important. If you are following a formula that someone else has succeeded with, and they have a stake in your success, you are much more likely to be able to succeed in your own home based business franchise.
